"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have openly begged for the role.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos often depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global audience.

Yet Haim will forever be their primary priority.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
