The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
